Beach Walk/Sport lecture/rescue center/vball/sb plans

The best part of waking up (sing it from the Folgers commercial)........is actually heading out to the beach along the coastline. And that is exactly what I did. I went for about an hour and walking as far as I could go in that time---it was already very warm and sunny at 7:30AM! Beautiful day breaking!! After my walk, I grabbed some breakfast and headed down to Lyn's class---today was actually Dave Arthur who would be talking about Sports and Recreation. Sports are huge in Australia especially Australian Rules, Cricket, Rugby, Tennis.
Today's field trip was to the Seabird Rescue which I was not thrilled about. Once I got there it was more about Sea Turtles which we watched a video on, saw some rescued turtles that were recently rescued and some already recovered. We also learned about turtle nests and were told the babies would be hatching within the next two weeks and to watch for them on the beach at sunset.
After the field trip it was time to start volleyball tournaments---4 games and 8 teams! Ohhh yeah my team won---round two is Wednesday followed by the Championship round! I love volleyball, I think everyone does here!
Tonight for dinner--we recooked the remaining pasta and I went out to get some more veggies, spaghetti sauce, and french bread and we all ate together again. Cooking for everyone is a very hard task, but having a meal provided is very reassuring and less worrisome for everyone. After dinner though lots of stress piled on---I had tons of homework to do but Spring Break also needed to be booked---the group I am going with met and we discussed flights and accommodations---hopefully we can all book by tomorrow--its getting close to crunch time.
I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer so it was bedtime for me! More progress tomorrow hopefully! Night!

Homework, pasta dinner

This morning I started looking at Spring Break options and looking at flights. It was so sunny out so I went and laid out for a bit. I love the sun!!  I then had to get some homework done which was a bummer because it was so beautiful out! I couldn't help but do my homework outside. I know this is not what all of you in the Midwest want to hear right now but it is really tough to do my homework when its nice, sunny, warm, and the beach is only 2 minutes away. I know I sound spoiled, but its really hard to get things done when its gorgeous out! But I tried to be as productive as possible.
I went off for a swim to give myself a break and swam 1000m then it was time for group dinner----spaghetti, garlic bread, salad, birthday cake and ice cream for Corrine's bday---mmm delicious! Dinner went great this Sunday---lots of extra food, actually enough for another entire meal tomorrow night! Then it was more Spring Break planning time, a little homework, and bed! Today went by way too fast and it was not really productive---hope tomorrow is better!

Fitness Classes/Byron

I started this morning at 6:25 and went to a Fund-raising Event for the floods of Queensland at the Swim&Gym. I took a Group Step, Group power, Boxing, and Spinning class. I loved all the classes--the instructors were very enthusiastic and fun! I talked to the instructors a bit--I loved this morning---felt in my realm. I miss teaching so much---I caught myself instructing under my breath. Colin came and joined for spinning and then we bused home together.
I was so sweaty all morning---a shower was mandatory! Then it was off to Byron for the night. Took the bus and grabbed some food at the Cheeky Monkey. The group got offered a pub hop pass and we decided that would be a great way to see the other bars, get free drinks, and also food. This hop included 5 pubs--Great Northern (chill relaxed, social pub), Aquarius (it was a backpackers and we played limbo, had pizza and given jungle juice, sat around a pool area just getting to know the others going for the pub hop, Lala Lands (dance club with lights, couches, I think this was pretty boring and smelled funny, there were some partner games, got a cranberry and vodka which was delicious), Cocomangas (Cocos) (Dance club and probably my favorite, there was a wooden block in the center which we danced on a lot--great DJ mix here, got 2 jungle juices at this bar--they tasted really good--mostly sugar I think), and Woodys (had a dance stage, an outside area, pool tables--this one didn't have as good of music-played a lot of older hits, but it was a good way to cool down).
I booked two taxis to bring them back. Got home around 1:30AM and went straight to bed---great night!

Insanity/Grocery again/beach/swim&run

Started this beautiful day with an Insanity plyometrics workout. I was dripping within 10 minutes. It was a great workout. Then it was second grocery day so I went off to Aldis and the mall again. The mall has a target, grocery store called Woolworth in it, a few souvenir stores, and a few clothing stores as well---the guys found some good deals on tank tops today.
After shopping it was back home to head to the beach. It was finally a sunny hot day which we were all missing and couldn't wait to get to the beach. I was so happy to be lying on the beach--back to paradise--and the breeze felt really good too! The tide came in pretty quickly so it was pushing my towel further and further back, so I returned to the cabin for some lunch. I then had a little work to get done and then went out to Shaws Bay to do a swim/run. Gardner (from BSU Tri club) was hooking me up with a group practice which I was really excited about. Shaws Bay-I really liked this area---small, personal beaches, rocks to climb, a boardwalk, skatepark, bridge.
I actually couldn't find the group so I started my own run over the hill and down along the boardwalk. When I got halfway down, I saw a bunch of triathletes coming toward me so I turned around with them and followed them along their run. I met the group which was about 50-60 athletes from age 8-60. Yes, there were quite a few young athletes--one I was surprised was about 10 I think. His dad rode a bike next to him as he ran and he was in the front of the pack too--what an outstanding athlete. I talked to a few of the guys and plan to come back on all the Fridays I can to train with them.
I went back to the cabins and went to dessert night at the Avilas---mmmmm love this night! After desserts, I decided to head to the pub for DJ competition night. The DJs were great tonight---lots of techno which brought a much younger crowd. The pub was packed! I enjoyed myself and so did all the other students, however, I had to head back early so I could get up for fitness classes in the morning.

Grocery, Biology-boat/school field trip, class

This morning is grocery day so we went to Aldis and then to the mall to stock up. After returning and having some lunch, I was off to join the Marine Biology class for their field trip. Today it was heading out on a boat to get a sample of micro-organisms from just below the waters surface. After collecting some samples, it was off to the Southern Cross Biology lab. My group scooped up a crab, a few small jellyfish, and lots of copepoids (crustaceans which look like little plankton). This was an interesting class to see these creatures under the microscope.
We went back to the cabins after the discoveries and it was homework time for me--boo! The weather has been very cloudy and rainy which makes it much easier to get things done for sure! Hoping it warms up soon!
After coming up with some ideas with Abby and Colin about Spring break which was in only 2 weeks---I had to let some stress out and take a run! The tide was very low so I ran on the beach all the way South until I ran out of beach and then went to the little gym at the recreation center for awhile. Tonight would be pretty relaxed--I went home for a shower and off to bed.

Tenterfield--Station, School of Arts, Settler, Cottage, home

Went to bed at 1 and woke up at 7--so a little tired but went off to breakfast. Had some scrambled eggs this morning, and toast and peaches again. Today, a cute old lady named Val would be leading us around on a historical tour of the town. Then we packed up the bus and went off to Tenterfield Station-this was a house in the process of being preserved with lots of antiques. We walked around the house, looking at the old rooms and antiques.
While driving along we saw the largest cork tree, a few town churches, schools, and then made it to the School of Arts. We sat in the theater to learn about the evolution of the building and about Henry Parkes (started the movement for the Federation of Australia). We continued on to meet the Mayor of Tenterfield who welcomed us to the town and share a bit more history of the town.
Then we were off to Tenterfield Saddlery which was were saddles were made and gossip around town was shared. We looked around for a bit and then were off to the Centenary Cottage form more antiques of Tenterfield. The last place we went to was Tenterfield Railway Museum where we could see the old trains of New South Wales.
Once we got back to the motel it was lunch time so we grabbed some apples and sandwiches and then were off back to Lennox Head. It never felt so good to see the beach again and be back in my cabin. Home sweet home---now time for some homework and bed!

Tenterfield--Sapphire Fossicking/Pioneer Village

Got up at 6:30AM and went to breakfast at the little dining cabin. There was cereal, bacon, over-easy eggs, peaches, and toast. My stomach is actually not feeling so great the last couple days from the food, I hope it gets better. After breakfast, it was time to board the bus for our new adventures today.
The first stop was a Sapphire Fossicking yard about 2.5 hours away. We learned the three steps in finding sapphires and other jems within dirt. The first step was to gather dirt in a bucket from a huge pile and sift out the large rocks and dirt masses. Then step two was to pour an amount in a smaller sifter and head to the water basin to wash the smaller rocks. This step included rocking the rocks/gems/dirt for about 5 min---getting as much dirt of as possible. The last step was taking the somewhat clean rocks/gems to a big barrel and dumping them out to search through them. I had to get a tweezers and pick out the gems I could find. I only found some low-grade sapphires and a couple quartz. Nothing worth millions...darn it! The real gems reflect the light but I think some of the other students found a couple small ones. It was a fun experience--got a little dirty and wet, but a new experience!
Then we were off to Pioneer Village for a BBQ lunch. There was sausage, steak, but I ate grilled onions, lettuce, hard boiled eggs, rice mix which had peppers, raisins, and curry in it (tasted a little different), cucumbers, and then dessert--which was delicious little cakes--chocolate, coconut with raspberry jam, raisin square, and a spice cake with lemon icing.
After lunch, we all got to walk around the village--there were about 20-25 little buildings that made up a town--a dairy, blacksmith, farming tools, eye doctor, post office. medical equipment, printing room/cash register, odd-house, nursery, military shop---everything was very antique and neat to see.
Then we were off to return to the motel--I fell asleep on the trip there and back this time. I brought blankets and just snuggles under them for a nice nap. We had 2 hours before dinner so we just hung out, listening to music, and then got ready for dinner which was at the Golf Club. It was time to get dressed up and head out for dinner. The club was huge and we had our own room to ourselves. The dinner was phenomenal and the best meal I have had yet! We were served a huge roll as an appetizer and then corn on the cob, steamed carrots and peas, a peeled baked potato, and vegetarian lasagna---mmmmmm it was squash, spinach, noodles, cheese- what a colorful plate it was--delicious! Then dessert came----mmmm apple pie and ice cream!!! This dinner just kept getting better!
After dinner I decided to have game night in my cabin and had a bunch of students over to play three-way charades (two teams make up words and place in a bowl, then switch bowls-first round you can say anything to get your team to guess the word, second round---only acting it out, third round--only one word is allowed to be said). It was a lot of fun and really funny too! Then more students came and we played signals (everyone made up a signal for themselves and one person stands in the center--he/she has to try to find who has the signal as it get passed around--you pass the sign by doing someone elses sign and they have to see you and accept it by doing their sign and then continuing to pass it along). This game got really loud and obnoxious, but really fun! It was about midnight when the game wrapped up--we had to get up early. We talked a little before climbing into bed---I love this queen!!!

Tenterfield Monday--road trip/winery/talent show

Lyn  (Professor of Australian Life and Culture) came to pick us all up this morning at 8AM. We were heading to Tenterfield which is a little town in New South Wales about 2.5-3 hours away. We all piled in and were off, making one stop at a McDonald's and then continuing on. Lyn played us Australian music and movies along the ride. We arrived at noon at the Golfers Inn Motel where we found beautiful and new cabins. The girls got all the new ones which had two rooms--one with a queen, and another with two twins, a kitchen, living room with a wrap around couch, and a bathroom. There was something very unique about the bathroom though---the shower consisted of a shower head inside the bathroom with a drain in the center of the bathroom. I guess this is very European but quite unusual to me. The shower is not enclosed in anything and just stands alone. Showering in it was different, very open, but a lot of space.
The owners of the motel feed us lunch---some sandwiches and juices and then were off for a day of adventure. The first stop was Thunderbolts Hideout. This is an Australian bushranger who committed over 200 crimes by stealing from people and hiding in this rock formed hideout. We went and sat in his hide-out which was neat.
The second stop was  the WWII tank trap which were used to stop the Japs from bring their tanks across the fields.
The third stop was Bald Rock. Right before we began to climb--we spotted our very first Kangaroo!!!! We were all so excited! We hopped out of the bus and ran over to get pictures. He/She was very photogenic---he/she hopped off as we left--so cute!! Lyn lead us all the way up the path, across large rocks, gravel path, and through trees and plants. It took us about an hour but we made it to the top of Bald Rock (3Km). The view was magnificent and breath-taking. We took a little time walking around and then had to walk the path down. This time however, Lyn took us downhill on a rock. This was a challenging downhill trip---but we just went on a diagonal or slide down--it was hard trying to fight the momentum. But we all made it.
The fourth and final stop was a Deetswood Winery where we walked among the grapes and vines. We even got to taste a grape off the vine! Mmmmm delicious! Then went inside to see how wine is produced and bottled. We were shown all the equipment and then got to taste test some of the wines too. We learned how to taste and swish wine and tried Semillon, Un-wooded Chardonnay, Kitty's Sweet Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shirax, Merlot, Cabernet Merlot, Platypus Sweet Red, and Platypus Port. Everything had very distinct flavors.
Then we went to the Motel for dinner---chicken kebabs, corn, asparagus, french fries (hot chips) and then ice cream sundaes-with strawberries. Then it was time for the talent show----we were responsible for making our own show. Some students sang, did a stomp routine on kitchen pots, some girls from Australia played guitar and sang (they were really good), Carlo and I did a hiphop number, and closed with the an Australian Day rap. The show was very impressive and a lot of fun to put on!!
What a great day and night! Time to shower ---early morning tomorrow so then it was bedtime!

Church/beach/hmwk

This morning I went to little church in town called St. Francis Xavier. It was a very small church, no AC, the pews and kneelers are all wooden and were very uncomfortable. There was no padding whatsoever---ouch!! The mass was very traditional, and it was very delightful to hear the accents during prayers, psalms, and songs. There were a few songs they played from back home and for the most part, singing sounds American with only a few words that draw out the Australian accent. I enjoyed the service and then went back home for breakfast.
It was already blazing hot and only 8:30AM so I decided to go lay out now and come in before it was unbearable.
I still had homework to do so the afternoon was another productive one--sitting in my kitchen under the fan--perfect spot!
I decided to head over to the pool and swim--haven't been swimming lately and felt a little winded this work-out--swam 1600m and then relaxed a little bit before dinner. Tonight was Mexican night----there is a Sunday night dinner committee which I am very thankful for and it was tacos, nachos, and bean dip! It was a successful dinner.
Because this weekend we are heading to Tennerfield (2 hr drive) with Lyn (professor) for the next three days, I had to pack tonight and learn a dance with Carlo--we would be putting on a talent show Monday night for the rest of the students so we decided to do a hiphop routine! It was another long day and have to make a 8 o'clock bus tomorrow morning so its bed time! Good night!

Circuit/beach/hmwk/pub

This morning I started the beautiful hot and sunny day with a little jog/walk cardio mix with three other students. The students have been requesting workouts and I love it! I have put some circuit, beach boot-camps, interval training things together which I hope they like! I took three students to the beach and we did some running/walking---we were sweating in less than 10 minutes thats how hot it was at 8 AM! Then I took them to the gym for an indoor circuit--luckily the gym has air conditioning which felt amazing!
I had a for some eggs so made some scrambled egg whites and toast with peanut butter when I got back. MMMMMM---I miss my dad's crepes though a lot and request them when I get home in May---that and some Giordano's Pizza. Cheese pizza for some reason just does not exist around here-lots of Margarita and Hawaiian pizza or Meat Lovers---right up my alley..not!
I did try a new kind of tuna which they sold in Coles, the grocery store--it was Rosemary and Sun-dried tomatoes and surprisingly was very good. It had a reddish tint to it but it was very tasty on toast.
It was blazing today--probably hitting the 100's today---boy its hot! I headed out to catch some rays and then came back for some homework time.
I was very productive today and ended by making dinner with Abby---had chicken kebabs on the grill tonight--burned my finger a little--but it was pretty good. I also has some pasta with mozzarella and corn!! Mmm it was quite filling. Then it was back to some homework. The pub was pretty dead tonight so I just stayed home and took it easy---the life of an Australian is starting to set in!

Mt. Warning

I woke up at 3:10AM and had all the students meet at my place at 3:15AM to start the trek up the volcano. We wanted to make the sunrise (which is the very first sunrise in the country because its the eastern most part) so we had to be up there by 6:30AM. Everyone had only about 4 hours of sleep and was running on pure adrenaline. I was told the hike would take about 3 hours up and 3 down. The trek started with the long haul to the car park which is at the base of the Volcano. It was a 3.5km (2.2 miles) walk all uphill. Some of the hills were extremely steep--I would say from 15% incline to 45-50% incline. It was a challenge to walk just a gravel road with it being so steep, but in just under an hour a group of us had made it to the car park. At this time, my shirt was drenched and I was dripping from my forehead and it was before 4:30AM. We ended up dividing into a couple groups---and I went with the first group who were moving pretty fast. We stretched at the bottom and I had a small snack, then it was time to head up the 1,157 meter high Volcano. My calves were already burning but the fun had not yet started. The trek was 8.8km=5.5 miles up and down again. Most of the trail was rocks, mud, stairs, and water. We kept each other together and motivated the whole way up checking on the last person and guiding with our flashlights. Everyone needed a flashlight to themselves--it was very dark in the rain forest and without one it would have been impossible. I clenched mine in my hand the entire way---jumping from rock to rock, sloshing through mud and water, and climbing on rocks. The trek was very strenuous. There were a few railings at times but the mud, water, and rocks made the path very difficult to move on. Some of the paths had concrete and stairs--I have never seen so many stairs in my life and there was no stopping when they started coming. Up and up and up we went. Climbing rocks, crossing waterfalls, balancing on boulders---I just kept my head down, flashlight forward watching the person in front of me-telling myself I could do this and to keep going. After crossing a waterfall--we decided to take a break-almost an hour in---got some water, took a breather and stretched some more. Then we were off again---hiking up further---harder rocks to travel on, and the terrain was becoming more and more wet as we continued through this rain forest. I was completely drenched by this point----but continually consuming water-I brought up 2 water bottles and my camel-pack too! The only bad thing was there were not toilets from the base up. The very last one was at the bottom by the entrance from the car park-however I was sweating enough I never had to go luckily. The terrain kept getting more difficult and at one point I didn't know if everyone could make it--but our group was determined and very supportive! We can do it--we cheered!! We stopped once more before hitting the hardest part---the end involved pulling ourselves up on all rocks with chains. This was the craziest part---climbing these huge, sharp, slippery rocks for the next 15 minutes all uphill! I could not believe how strenuous this was and then remembered I was climbing a volcano. This part was very hard holding a flashlight but we all struggled through and made it. It took us one hour and 20 minutes from the base of the Volcano up (2-3 hours is typical)--we were cruising and felt it once we got to the top---everyone was drenched but we made it. We took tons of pics when the day broke and sun rose. Wow what a spectacular view---We had struggled so much but we made it! Finally made it to the top and had a few minutes to spare for the first sunrise ever! That was one of the physically straining things I have ever done---wow was I sore and my calves killed. We all had some snack to refuel and drank lots of water. It got a little chilly up at the top because we were all dripping with sweat, but soon the sun pierced through the clouds. The view from the top was incredible. I was higher than some clouds and could see towns over miles. Looking out I could see other National Parks, volcanoes, mountains, such indescribable nature. There were a few different platforms which I walked around and got a look for every angle possible. The brilliant sun came out over the clouds and radiated at all of us! What an achievement and it was only 6:30AM!!
Now that we got up, we had to get down too. The trek down was twice as long and very scary--going down the chain on the rocks was nerve-racking---where do I put my foot and not slip, twist my ankle, or fall. I decided I would take my time, take pictures, and enjoy the nature/wildlife around me. The trek down felt like it took a whole day and it all looked so different than when we went up. The beautiful rain forest had come to life, I got to see 2 small lizards, one huge lizard, a black snake, and a pademelon (like a wallaby). We found some gigantic trees and also several spider webs. There was even a 2 Turkeys along our trek. It was very tricky coming down and I slipped a lot but we made it down by 10:00. The first thing we did when we got to the car park was go to those toilets. Boy did that feel good. That wasn't the end though, we had the entire downhill walk from the car park to the cabin. This was also very challenging because our legs were shaking already and had very little control of the acceleration forward. I took my time again and made it back by 10:30 to the cabins. A total of 15.8km=9.8 miles. What an accomplishment and done so early in the morning. It felt great to meet up with the rest of the crew and finally stretch and sit down. The bus picked us up at 11:30AM and we were on our way back home. Everyone got on the bus and crashed---the bus was silent within 5 minutes of driving. I was exhausted. It felt great to be on the ground again and be sitting. After we got home, a shower was desperately needed and a little energy was also needed.
My legs were rubber and I knew the rest of the day would be relaxing and homework. What a marvelous way to start the day--I am so proud to have made it up!!

Grocery store/travel agent/class/bus ride to Mt. Warning

This morning I got the Mt. Warning trip straightened out with buses and cabin stay. Then it was off to the grocery store--Aldis and Coles and the Travel Agent for upcoming trips. I grabbed a very quick lunch and headed to Event Management with the other students. I just tag along in this class since it has to do with Sports, Wellness, and Management. Dave Arthur teaches this class and he is fun, sarcastic, go-with-flow guy, however he does not consider dance or cheerleading sports so I have some bones to pick with him through the semester. His lecture is 3 hours but he said he would never keep us that long which is great. He gave me some insight into an independent study project and is trying to get the students and I to volunteer at a Rugby Game and go see Dog Races on the beach. I am looking forward to that. Right after class I had to quickly shower and pack for the Mt. Warning trip tonight. The bus picked 20 students and I whom would climb Mt. Warning tomorrow and we left at 8PM. Mt. Warning is an inactive volcano and a trek of 8.8KM=5.49 miles. I was told this is a moderate to advanced hike until the top where you pull yourself up by chains on rocks, however, I found out that this was actually a strenuous hike. The drive only took an hour and a half, had a little trouble finding the Mt. Warning Holiday Park, but got to the cabins I rented at about 9:45PM. Our cabins had two sets of bunks, a double bed and pull out couch. I shared the double with my cabinmate Abby and 5 other girls shared the bunks and pull-out. We chatted about the hike and how anxious we were and then went to bed-----I am going to need lots and lots of rest for this long hike!

Bike/class-field trip

Good morning everyone!! I miss everyone from home and school and hope you are all surviving the snow back in the Midwest!
This morning I started with a nice uphill bike ride with three other students. We took the street out which is very hilly. Everywhere we turned was another hill. It was a bit chilly but after the first hill we were all sweating. It was a great ride, however, only about 45 minutes because I had an online class to get back to. After class, I organized the rest of the Mt. Warning/Gold Coast trip for this weekend.
I joined up with the Marine Biology class to head out to Cast Point where we walked among hundreds and hundreds of rocks to find marine life---we came across small fish, crabs, sea anemones, lots of shells, and sea cucumbers. We searched little water holes, and some of the students even snorkeled close by. I held my first crab today! It was blazing hot this afternoon! If felt good to get back in the bus and feel some AC!!
The rest of the night I planned more of the Mt. Warning trip---lots of stress today with booking/canceling/running back and forth to cabins----brain is fried today but tomorrow is another day and it will be a long one!!

Travel Agent/beach/Quattro dinner

I started the morning with a great run and full body workout. It is great having a gym now!! While I was finishing up, it started to pour---boo and it continued on and off for the next couple hours--perfect for getting work done! Today I had to go see a travel agent with one of the students to get some prices for the other trips that could happen during the semester. The travel agent was very helpful and we got some good estimates. I also ran into target and got some more souvenirs. Once I got back to the cabins, I started to organize the trip to Mt. Warning which is a volcano about an hour from Lennox Head. We would stay in a cabin and then climb the mountain the next morning.
Once I got a little work and planning done, I needed some beach time. I suited up and headed to the beautiful beach. Now it was hot and sunny and I laid out on the beach. I took a walk down the shoreline as well. I just love being so close to the ocean and just walked and listened to the crashing waves. What a relaxing and refreshing place to be. While I was walking, I saw a fish carcass wash up on the sand and a couple seagulls peaking at it. I love the beach!!
I had to call a meeting for the students to discuss the new trips I found today and about Mt. Warning. Then it was time for some Ab Ripper with a couple of the other girls. After that, Casey and Amanda C asked me to go to dinner with them----we went to Quattro, a place down in town. We ordered and shared a pizza called Guilliano--it was delicious---it was seasoned chicken, mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, and garlic---mmmmm! This is the first time I ate in town and it was well worth it! The pizza with 8 slices cost AUS$ 18---everything is outrageously expensive I have found!
I was pretty exhausted after a day of running around and planning trips, that the night was short lived---got some more work done and listened to music--looking for forward to trips to come!!

Class field trip--aborigine sites, naval & maritime museum, tea tree, lighthouse, breakfast for dinner

This morning I tried out the new gym with Abby. It is a small room but gets the job done. Then is was back to the cabins for breakfast and off to class for the day. Mondays are always with Lyn Lockery and he is a superb historian and educator on Australia history and life. He talked about the Aborigine culture and how Australia started.
Aborigines were the first settlers among the land and were there more than 60,000 years ago. Then the Europeans came over and started to make many changes and rule over the land. The native people were treated very poorly and often murdered. Many were hanged, shot, or killed in mass amounts.
Australia is made up of 5 states and 2 territories and is a mixture of many different culture influences.
Lyn also shared a couple of videos of the "First Australians" or the Aborigine people. One which stuck with me was one how these three little girls were taken away from their mom and grandmother because they were considered "half cast" and would be used to shut out the Aborigine race. It was hard to watch and see what these individuals were facing as their people and children were disappearing.
Today, there is a government representing the Aborigine people and protecting them from any further culture extinction.
After Lyn's lecture it was lunch time and then field trip time. The first stop--an Aborigine preserve close to where we were staying. This circle of land was dedicated to these people for their ceremonies. Next, Lyn took us to the Naval and Maritime Museum. This is a memorial museum of all the ships, crew, and artifacts from many wars and adventures.
The third stop was a Tea Tree shop called Thursday Plantation where I learned about the medicinal plant and got to test the different lotions, cremes, oils, and washes that were there. This is a natural mineral from Tea trees providing a relief, soothing feeling for many different uses.
The last stop on the field trip is the Lighthouse in Byron Bay. We drove up to the landing and then hiked the remaining way up to the huge lighthouse. When we got to the top we all peered over and saw some dark shadows in the water. We found out these were sharks and also sea turtles. What an amazing sights from here---beautiful ocean, rushing water on rocks, and a cool breeze. We hiked down a little path along the edge of the cliff and got some beautiful views. Then it was back to the cabins for dinner.
Breakfast for dinner was on the group meal menu---french toast, bacon, sausage, and assorted muffins!! Mmmmmmm! Dinner was delicious and then I researched places to go over Spring Break for the rest of the evening.
The guys in two of the cabins decided to play a prank on each other and placed about 30 toads in one of the cabins. I heard a loud commotion from across the volleyball court and realized the guys were tossing the toads just poured into their cabins. The guys started to smack the toads with cricket sticks--I was really disappointed in how inhumane these guys were. What a shame!

Grasshopper tour-waterfall, Nimbin

After the best night of dancing, I had a full tour planned for the students and I. At 9:20AM we boarded a bus and it was time for some fun! This tour I booked through Greyhound and had multiple destinations along its course. The first bus ride was about an hour and a half  but it was a beautiful one. Lots of lush green pastures, rolling hills, acres and acres of green nature.
The first stop was Nimbin---alternative lifestyle community. That means lots of rainbows, weed, and  "cookies." In the matter of 60 seconds from getting of our rainbow bus, we were offered weed and cookies. Totaling about 4 offers I believe in the hour we spent there. I walked around the shop and looked at lots of tie-dye, hemp, and jewelry and then we were off to the second stop, a huge market.
The tour took us to this massive market with tons of tents, food, ice cream, clothing, and gift--it was much like a fair. I got some fruit ice cream--made with bananas and strawberries---mmmm delicious on such a hot hot day. I also had a little kettle corn which was made there. After an hour of walking around the market, it was off to our BBQ where I had a veggie burger and a salad and took a nice walk along a trail.
The final destination was Whian Whian Waterfall---we went to this same waterfall Monday with Lyn, but got to go again on this tour. We spent only 15 minutes here and then had an hour drive back home. Everyone enjoyed getting a little wet and refreshed by the waterfall. By this time we were all exhausted and napping on the bus for the ride home. It was a long day and we all wanted to get back to our cabins. Getting dropped off at our stop, this is the first time it felt like "home." We were all happy to be back along the lake and back to our little community in Lennox Head.

Byron shopping/vball/pub

I woke this morning to warmth and sunshine---I love this place!! It is already over 80-degrees and its 8:30AM! It will be a hot one! Today I am heading to Byron Bay--a little town about a half hour away. It has lots of markets, shops, souvenirs, bars, restaurants. I can't wait to do a little shopping!!
I did tons of walking and shopping today!! I got some souvenirs for friends and family and enjoyed some subway for lunch! I also met some American students who were also studying abroad in Australia and staying by Lake I was for the weekend---it felt like home to hear someone without an Aussie accent!
Abby, Colin, and I walked around the town together and took the bus back to our cabins. I had a salad with a few chicken tenders on it!! Mmm and a yogurt popsicle!!
I started a volleyball game and then went to the pub--its called Lennox Head Hotel bar---and we met the other American students I met today in town there. Americans are taking over the pub--uh oh! We all met there and chatted for a little while before hitting the dance floor! The opening band was a great and there seemed to be a much younger crowd tonight at the pub. The main band was "One Step Closer" and they were phenomenal----tonight was the best pub night so far. He made shout outs to Ball State and had two of our students (Carlo and Chelsea) join as singers. They played lots of American songs with a bebop twist--He even played Justin Bieber, Backstreet Boys, Kings of Leon, Prince...it was awesome! The band even did a dance circle, however, only Carlo and I would enter it! It was a great night. The band wrapped up at 1AM, but came back to play just one more song which was a great ending. Then I got on my bike (we ride bikes down to the pub to make it easier though for some students this just makes it more of a challenge) and headed back to my cabin--what a great night!

Crazy Clarks/Kayaking

This morning I did an outdoor circuit on the beach---it was a great day for it because the clouds hide the sun from making too hot! There was a small breeze as well! Perfect for the beach workout!! I had some pancakes, peanut butter, and bananas made from the other night for breakfast and then got some school work done. Then I had to meet with John Mills (Millsy) who is the Director of the Recreation Center and get our new pool and gym keys. I was so excited to see the work-out facility they were providing----4 spin bikes, a treadmill, elliptical, weights, benches, and 2 sauna rooms--how sweet--I am super excited!!
Abby and I ran over to Crazy Clarks which is an awesome dollar store and I found a good deal on Australian towels so I grabbed a few for the students and we headed back to go kayaking on the lake. The lake was very calm today and such a great ride--a bunch of us kayaked out and then hung on to each other and just laid back and floated along---now this was the life!! Returning back in, Abby and I took a channel pass and had to serve in and out of trees which was fun! Once we docked our kayaks, Abby and I retreated to the pool and chatted in the sun!
Abby would make her pizza casserole dish tonight--it was spiral pasta with chicken sausage, pizza sauce, and mozzarella cheese. And mmmm was it good!! Way to go Abby! A bunch of the guys were throwing a football and frisbee around so I joined them until the bugs got too bad. We headed out to the local pub tonight to listen to the live band---they weren't great tonight but I bumped into the Director of the Recreation Center there and talked with him and the chef. I was exhausted so I didn't stay late because this weekend was pretty packed with trips!

Grocery shopping/bike/read Sunburned Country

This morning was a little rainy and grocery day. Piled up the students into a bus and then went to Aldis, Coles, and Kmart! I found some cute Australian flag shorts for AUS $5! Woohoo! Once I came back I skyped and talked to Natalie, Breanne, and Kylie! Miss you all!
I decided to go for a bike ride with Colin too! It is illegal to ride without a helmet here and can be fined AUS $58 if we don't--so safety first I put my awesome helmet on..lol! We took about an hour bike ride and headed back to the cabins. I went off to the beach for some short tanning time and then joined the other students in the Event Management class. This class covers hosting a sporting event here and getting intramural volleyball started for the other BSU students. Dave is the instructor and he is very laid back guy and loves to joke around...perfect! He also let us out an hr and a half early!
I had to read Ch. 13 which was about the Aborigines---I learned that they have "been here for the past 60,000 years at least and have the oldest maintained culture in the world. Also, their arts, stories, and systems of beliefs are among the oldest on earth." However, something sad that the chapter shared was that the Aborigines were murdered by other Australian citizens and British. There were many stories shared of how the Aborigines were hanged, and stoned. Colin and I read it out loud which was fun and then we made dinner---salads and sweet potato----mmmm!
The Avilas hosted a dessert night once a week for 5 students and me to get to know them which was delicious! We tried a famous dessert called Lady Lemington Fingers ( white cake, raspberry filling, dusted with cocoa and coconut). They were delicious! Mmmmhmmm! Great way to end the day!
I closed the day out by hanging out at my cabin and chatting!

Class/shopping/lake

This morning was my online class followed by Marine Biology. Danny the professor is a professor from Southern Cross and he is very passionate about Biology. He shared:
The U.S. owns most of the oceans followed by France and then Australia.
Also he shared that Australia has the most diverse marine fauna--few specimens, but an abundance of different specimens.
I also learned that the East Coast of most continents have warm water at the coast because water pulls from the equator to the poles and the West Coast has cool water because the water pulls from the poles to the equator.
After 3 hours of lecture, I retreated to get a 6 inch subway sandwich and then ran to the mall with Kate and Terry. We found a Target at the mall which was very similar to the ones at home. Clothing, shoes, toys, bed/bath, and toiletries.
We walked around to another dollar store and then went to a couple other gyms for me and then back to the cabins. The surf coach, Serena, came to bring the students their surf certificates. Today I also found out that we booked a trip to Sydney for the first week of March. I can't wait!
There was still some sun left so a few students and I went to the lake. We took a short dip in the TeaTree Lake--this lake has a lot of nutrients from TeaTree--its great for our skin and hair we were told!
Tonight was going to be pancakes for dinner! The first few were ugly but then they got better and were delicious with peanut butter.  mmmmmmm!
Finished the night with some homework, booked a flight to Boston to visit my friend Katie and just hung out in our cabin! I heard some loud noises coming from one of my students' cabin so I had to go check it out----it was a dance party so I couldn't pass up the opportunity and joined for a little bit. But I was exhausted and need some sleep! Grocery day tomorrow morning!!!!

Rainy Tuesday

It was sprinkling this morning again, but I went for a run anyway. Only 40 minutes but I took it uphill to the roundabout----these are things the Australians use to keep traffic going. I have only seen a few stop lights on main highways and one stop sign. Australians don't believe in stop signs because they waste so much gas. I love this idea and I dislike stop signs anyway! There are only "Give Way" signs which is equivalent to a yield sign in the U.S. At the roundabout there are 4 streets coming to one circle and I just have to wait for clearance on the right side to go---its much like 8 Corners back at home, however, I go to the left around the circle and exit on the left side.
Anyways, I ran uphill to the first roundabout probably only 1.5 miles away and then through town. The rain felt pretty to be honest, but it was still pretty humid. I found a gym on my way back but it was pretty expensive to join so I went back to my cabin and had some oatmeal and a banana for breakfast. The bananas are getting very very expensive here because much of the fruit was destroyed by the cyclone which hit 2 days ago along the Northern coast. I believe they are AUS$3.99/kg and continuing to rise---Danielle is not going to be eating many bananas then.
Because it was pretty rainy and gross out, I decided to do all my homework today.
It rained the entire day boo! After working for 4-5 hours, I had to get out if the cabin so I went for an Ocean walk and found Tyler and Matt. We walked down the beach together, but I realized it was Tuesday---Tuesday is buy one get one footlongs---so we went back and biked to Subway.
When we got back to the cabins, Abby and I made chicken tacos and chicken taco salads and then we researched places for our trip to New Zealand--I know its early but just trying to plan ahead!
Tonight in our cabin we played Taboo with a huge bunch of students.

Loud crash/First class today with Lyn-field trip

In the middle of the night, the winds got really strong due to the Cyclone happening just North of us. Because we don't have air conditioning in the cabins, our windows are always open and we have fans in our windows. During the night however the wind got so strong that the fan was blow in side and everything on the nightstand got thrown across the room. It was so loud that Abby and I both jumped and were shaking from the loud crash. After a half hour we both settled back to sleep. It also was very cold this morning and actually for once use a comforter. I even put a sweatshirt on in the morning to stay warm---good thing I brought one just in case!
The weather is quite crummy today---raining and windy--not a good mix for our first field trip.
It started in the classroom up by the lake. Lyn Lockery who is a retired professor of Southern Cross (University here) and teaches Australian Life and Culture. He shared an outline of what his class will cover and all the field trips we we will go on. He let us listen to the Australian National Anthem song, talked about the cyclones and fires that are going on, and also some interesting facts about the unique animals like :
Of the 268 species of mammals, 80% are unique to Australia.
Australia is the driest inhabited continent on earth.
Today almost 1 in 4 of Australia's population of more then 21 million was born overseas.
Then we went to the Environmental Education Center and learned about the plants and geography of the Australia. Then we were served lunch---on the menu was kangaroo, crocodile, pasta salad, salad, all types of breads and jams, macadamians, and then for dessert a macadamian and apricot bar which was delicious!
The crocodile was a bit like chicken and fish however was a bit harder to cut and chew. The kangaroo was in meatballs and a lot like beef meatballs with onions and carrots in it. The dark berry jam was the best, but I tried a plum one and a wildberry one too. After lunch we got to throw a boomerang around and then went to a waterfall. This place was amazing. We had to hike about 10 minutes to get there and cross the top of the waterfall, over a rock path, but it was great bonding/teamwork time. Once we got to the bottom we could jump into the water and climb up and down the waterfall. I finally talked myself into going to the very top cliff and jumping off. It was such a rush! The water below was about 18 ft deep so I felt safe but it was definitely frightening.
Then we all had to climb the waterfall to leave and we headed back to Lennox Head. While doing so we traveled through Lismore and a couple more small towns to see other areas. We saw a couple Koala crossings and even stopped at a rest stop to see hundreds of bats sitting in a tree. They were everywhere! What a great first adventure.
After returning to the cabins, it was superbowl party night---Dr. Avila had the superbowl recorded and we grilled hotdogs, had mac and cheese, baked beans, fruit, grilled veggies, yogurt bars and chocolate ice cream bars. We all watched the Packers Win the superbowl and then went back to our cabins. Everyone was very tired but we played a few games of catchphrase and then called it a night!
I want to wish my sister a Happy Happy Birthday from Down Under !!! I hope you are have a great tomorrow!!!

Shopping for group dinner/pizza night

I slept in a little this morning from the long night. Abby and I hung out and chatted while I got some work done. I needed to go outside for a bit thought so I am heading down to the ocean for a walk!
I also go my bags last night/this morning!!! Woo hoo only took 5 days!! But finally I have my own clothing!
The walk never happened since the Avilas just pulled up and I had to meet with Dr. Avila about the next two nights dinner. I had to then head off to Crazy Clarks, Aldis (which I was so excited to see in Australia), and Coles (grocery store) to get the meals that Abby and I planned. We would have salads, pizza from Dominos, and pop tonight and then fruit, hotdogs, grilled veggies, mac and cheese, baked beans, and yogurt bars and chocolate ice cream bars for dessert. It took Abby and I almost 4 hours to shop and make sure we had everything for all 28 students---it was exhausting to say the least. I stayed out of the sun though which my skin appreciated I think. The pictures below were some funny fruits that I just had to get a picture of and share! lol!
By the time we got back, we had to start making the salads and have the meeting/pizza was being delivered at 6:30PM. The pizza were larges and they were only about half the size of the normal size pizza. Margarita pizza is a very popular pizza flavor---cheese, tomatoes, and some spices basically. And the cheese pizza had so much cheese, no one could separate a piece... I tried a piece of Margarita--it was ok but nothing compared to Chicago thats for sure. After dinner and talking about some odds and ends, we had a volleyball game.
I felt like I did nothing today and really need to find a gym or I may go crazy----the weather makes up for it though---it has been sunny, about 85-90 degrees everyday. A very typical term they use here is "no worries." The Australians are such happy, go-with-the-flow kind of people, there is no planning involved here and if there are plans they change all the time. They are very kind individuals though, always willing to help, and the accents are still awesome to hear! I hope I pick up one before I get home!
Did the first load of laundry today and then it was bedtime--what a weekend! First class tomorrow at 8:30!!

Byron Bay day and night

Woke up and went for a outdoor circuit on the beach!! It was very hot and sunny and it was only 7:30AM!!! After my circuit, I ate a bowl a cereal with some raisins and a banana and then off to shower. Sweating is an understatement here I think---I am drenched!
Off to Byron Bay for the day and evening!!
I went down on the bus with the last group at 11:30AM, it took about 30 min to reach Byron Bay. Byron Bay is right off the Ocean had tons of little shops/restaurants/ice cream shops/bars. There was one main strip and many side streets.
To start the day off, I went down to the beach to see the groups surfing. All the students enjoyed the lessons, however, some of them got stung by jellyfish. I didn't want to surf because I don't like getting in that deep of water, but I do plan on Scuba diving. After coming back with some students, we walked around the town, ate lunch and got some ice cream! I had some Strawberries and Creme!! MMM it was delicious but melted so quickly! It was blazing hot today! And I was sunburn so that didn't help! The tops of my feet and my forearms are the worse so I covered myself in 80SPF today.
After ice cream we all met at the Hostel----a hostel is a dorm-like accommodation---5 people to a room, bunk beds, sheets and pillows, provided, communal bathroom. Only 18 students would be staying the night in order to dive tomorrow. The rest of us will Taxi it home.
After we got situated at the hostel we met at Sundive to meet with Julie (BSU grad who married the Surf Coach Jack) to go over dives and meeting times. Then we got ready to go out and headed to the Cheeky Monkey for the night---this is considered a Party Bar. Being at the hostel we were given free admission and free drinks for the first few hours so we went at 7PM. Not the best meal but I has some Chicken Schnitzel which is a crumbled, I think fried chicken with chips (fries) and a small salad for $5---best deal so far!
Cheeky Monkey plays some games during the night, spinning a fun wheel, loud cheering to win alcohol (our group won 6 pitchers), and this night was Ladies night so there was a male strip contest---and yes some of the students went and entered----quite entertaining to say the least!! Then it was time to get on the tables we just ate on and dance--this is custom for this place----we all enjoyed ourselves very much and danced a ton!!
I met three girls staying at the hostel as well, one girl from England (traveling on her own for 10 weeks for her Christmas break) and the other two from Scotland (just moved here and looking to work and live for the next year). They were such nice girls and we just chatted about things to do here and how beautiful of place this country is. They are brave girls leaving their home country with no exact plans in hopes of making a living--I don't think I could do that, but I give them a lot of credit for being such adventurers.

Since we started so early that day we left around 1AM and headed back to the hostel where the Maxi Taxi would pick us up. We made it to the cabins by 1:40AM all safe and sound. What a great night, now I need some sleep!

Baggage

I am still missing my luggage---but I hope they call me soon and find it!!! I am borrowing clothing from the other girls but it would be nice to wear the clothing I packed! I am living in my bathing suits but I can't complain!!
Not going to lie---I hugged my clothing when I opened my suitcase.

Sunrise/Kayak/Friday night pub

I got up at 4AM and decided to watch the sunrise. About 12 students went with me, we walked through our path and out to the beach! It was pitch black so we brought many flashlights and walked down along the coast. I got to see my first shooting star this morning. I was looking up at the beautiful and clear sky and saw a ray of light leap across the sky. Its going to be a spectacular day!
Then we hiked it up the peak----grassy hill that was partly muddy and partly paved. The top was just gorgeous though! We hiked a little further up and found a great platform with rushing waves on rocks and breaking clouds. What a beautiful way to start my day! As the sun rose we just marveled the majestic scene. We walked all the way home--which felt a lot longer than the first walk!
We all had to clean off when we returned and get some breakfast---I had some cereal and a banana. I may need a nap to get ready for canoeing and kayaking today.
I napped for 40 minutes and then went out to the ocean. The waves were huge today and the water was freezing!! I stayed ankle deep and then went back to my cabin.
Time for kayaking----a bunch of us went down to the lake and got into kayaks--these kayaks were relatively small and tipped really easily----I think a quarter of the students fell in. We had a blast circling the lake. Luckily I did not fall in, but quite a few times I thought I was going to. What a great upper body workout! Then it was off to the pool for some laps--ohh how I miss Triathlon Swim Practice!! I swam only 1400 with some drills, but it felt great. And the good thing is that half the pool is covered so its much cooler.
I am starting to get sunburn today and am applying lots and lots of aloe!
I was off to plan the weekend trip to Byron Bay this evening----booking a hostel, getting surf lessons for the students, and also scuba dives. After running around the cabins to get students input, it was time to head to the town for a night out! All the students had already gone and Abby and I were on our way about 9PM. The pub we went to was hopping, they had some great reggae bands and all the students and myself danced the night away. What a great time. We met tons of Australians who gave us tips for our excursions. The people as everyone preaches are just wonderful, nice, warm, welcoming individuals! And look at the place they get to live--how lucky!
All the students enjoyed themselves very much. Abby and I left around midnight and headed back on our bikes, it was nice to feel the breeze after being inside the bar----they don't believe in AC here so its just hot!!
Time to sleep--big day in Byron tomorrow!
Also, they finally found the student and mine's luggage----we should be getting it tomorrow or Sunday they said---keeping my fingers crossed!

Driving in Ballina/Byron Bay

I passed my driving test----but boy was it weird driving on the left side from the right side of the car. It was very unusual and rather challenging, but a bit of fun as well. Dr. Avila, Terry (his wife), Kate (his daughter), and my cabin-mate Abby went along for the ride. I think I did a fairly good job, however, since the turn signal is located on the right side, I kept hitting the windshield wipers instead and had them flying back and forth which was pretty entertaining. I drove and discovered the Aldi's, Crazy Clarks (discount dollar store), bus station, dropped by a local fish stop and had some fish and chips (mine of course was grilled---it was Hockey--simple white fish which tasted good---along with some tomato sauce (ketchup).
I looked into a couple gyms because I am going nuts not being able to weight lift, however, I am getting my cardio in by running, biking, and swimming everyday.
After returning the van safe and sound, I hopped on a bike and took it along the beach up to the peak (grassy hill). 4 Girls and 4 guys went, however the girls stopped by the base of the hill due to the muddy path which led upward and went back through town to go home. After returning, a volleyball net was set up in between the cabins, but soon it was 6 and time for another meeting. Surf coaches came into talk more about the lessons being offered on Saturday and we discussed what trips we would do over our stay.
Today was Rory's birthday so the Avila bought ice cream and cookies for everyone--mmm delicious!!!
We ended the night with a fun volleyball game and a bonfire!

Morning Beach walk

Beautiful morning again!! I decided to go for a beach walk this morning!! I got up around 7 and headed to the beach. Saw a few jellyfish and seagulls while walking along the ocean front. What a beautiful way to start the day! I returned home to have some oatmeal and then was off to the beach for some sun!
Today I would be taking a driving test with Dr. Avila! Right side of the car and left side of the road!! Ahhhh!!! Wish me luck!

First Day!

Woke up around 7:30AM to get started on an online class to find out BSU was under so much snow and classes was canceled! Well that meant time to get my blog started and also get the cabin a bit more organized!
For break fast I ate an apple and also some Just Right cereal---much like Honey bunches of Oats. Then it was off for a run which I did around 10:30AM out into town and into a Hippie Trailor Park area---very nice people and I just followed around a black path around the park. Boy was it hot though----I ran for only 30 minutes because I was dripping because of the heat-- I will have to go earlier from now on. I made it back home and had a little snack. We were all going to the grocery today--called Coles and KMart. We piled into a van and Dr. Avila's van and went to Byron Bay--about 15 min bus ride. We went to a Bait and Tackle shop where a bunch of students got their fishing licenses and then we went to Coles. Abby and I shopped together for items! Some things I had never heard of and we made a guess on most items since we didn't know any of the product names. It took us about 45 min to shop the entire store and AUS100 later we were done. I spent AUS 20 and together we spent  AUS52 to share dinners and make meals together. Everything was very expensive and we really didn't know if we would enjoy any of it, but it was worth a go!
After the grocery, I was contacting the luggage services and luckily one of the students bags were found and would be returned that evening. 2 of the 4 bags would be here!! I am still missing mine and can't wait for it to get here---in the meantime some of the students were so generous to let me borrow flipflops, tank tops, and shorts from their bags. What nice students!

We had a meeting at 6 with another director about the rules of the cabin and camp and also introduce Scuba and Surfing lessons. We talked about taking surf lessons and going Scuba Diving. Then it was back to the cabin---it was a long day and I am beat-- time to get some rest for another big day tomorrow!
